Introducing Project Providence

Project providence is a new technology, developed by Truepic and Microsoft, that provides a way to validate the authenticity of a piece of media from the moment of capture until viewing. Providence increases trust in digital images and videos, helps fight against deepfakes and manipulated media, and adds a layer of accountability by rebutting accusations of false or manipulated digital content.

What is Project Providence?

Microsoft and Truepic are working together to launch “Project Providence,” the world’s first interoperable image authentication platform. The Project Providence platform uses Truepic’s authenticating camera SDK and the Microsoft Azure cloud platform to produce the first interoperable system that captures and maintains the provenance or origin of images captured, from storage to display. This enables users to verify images as authentic (taken by who claimed to have taken them without modification) and transparently display their time, date, location, and source to viewers. With this technology, modifications to the images can always be forensically detected and the authentic source of images can be proven.

“Project Providence is helping ensure that [Digital Documentation] efforts will not be undermined with accusations of being false, manipulated, or deepfakes at any time moving forward. This trend, known as the Liar’s Dividend, is a great threat to all documentation.”
